The eagles defense could look very different next season as top CBs look for a trade-off

Things can change quickly in the NFL, and the Philadelphia Eagles may be about to figure it out.

According to a report from ESPN's Diana Russini, the Eagles have allowed star full-back Darius Slay to seek out a trade as a major overhaul of the team's defense appears to be about to begin.

Along with the possibility of losing Slay, the Eagles have a long list of defensive freedom agents, including Fletcher Cox, James Bradberry, TJ Edwards, Ndamukong Suh, Javon Hargrave, Brandon Graham, CJ Gardner-Johnson, Robert Quinn and Linval Joseph.

That list includes seven of their top 12 players in terms of defensive saves played, and if Slay ends up being traded it would increase the list of potential departures to eight. It's almost a whole new way of defending in a season.

The defense finished the 2022 season in second place in yards and eighth in allowed points, helping the team get to the Super Bowl, losing to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Slay, a five-time professional pitcher, is one of the NFL's top fullbacks.

The motivation for the Eagles to allow Slay to look for a deal is because he has a $26 million salary cap for the 2023 season, a hefty price tag for a 31-year-old no matter how good he is. That limited hit will almost certainly limit the value of his trade if he can find a team.

The good news for the Eagles is that they have two picks in the first round - 10th place overall due to trading with the New Orleans Saints and 30th place of their own.
